If you’re currently using WordPress, it’s highly recommended that you take a moment to upgrade to WordPress 2.0.2.
The WordPress Development team has just released a security update that addresses some XSS issues.
(XSS stands for cross site scripting, and it can allow someone without the proper privileges to gather unauthorized data from your website and/or add unauthorized data - like javascript or ActiveX - to your website.)

I would caution that it depends what version your presently using as to how easilly any upgrade will happen. For instance from 2.0 to 2.02 should be easy.
For 1.5 to 2.0 go to wordpress.org to seek out the installation guide for this upgrade. It is a major upgrade and things can go wrong if you don’t follow there instructions. The farther back you are the more steps you have to take.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting Bob.
You’re right, a lot can happen when one is upgrading.
As with any upgrade, I’d highly recommend a complete website/database backup first :).

I just installed 2.0.2 on a new domain, and the theme I generally use doesn’t work. I’m assuming since you recommend using 2.0.2 that the Optiniche theme works on 2.0.2?
Thanks,
John

Hi John,
I’m using my themes on a number of WP sites running 2.0.2 and haven’t had a problem :).

It is wise for those of us who are less tech savvy to wait for the others to upgrade and resolve a lot of issues that may arise with any new release.

Not necessarily in this case since this is a security upgrade.
If upgrading to a completely new version of WordPress seems a bit of a leap, then at least consider upgrading to a secured version of 1.5.x.

I just installed a new blog on a new site and it keeps telling me…
“Sorry, you need to enable sending referrers for this feature to work.”
I click on the kink for directions to enable this and I am still getting the same error. Any ideas?

Hi Jason,
I’ve had that happen before, but usually when I tried to call an admin page directly or hit refresh without clicking a link or button.
Usually this isn’t anything to worry. Try clearing your web browser’s cache and then clicking through the admin links again.
If the problem persists, follow the instructions for enabling referrers for your browser. If it still persists, there may be a problem with your browser’s ability to send referrers, like a firewall or proxy.
Hope that helps,

If I am setting up a NEW blog, what version of wordpress is recommended… ver 1.5.x OR ver 2.0.2?
It seems that a lot of people want to continue using 1.5 and not upgrade to 2.0 for their own various reasons.
Or, is it better to start with 2.0 now and avoid a major upgrade at a later date?
Thanks… Al

Hi Al,
Honestly? I still believe it’s personal preference.
If upgrading in the future seems like it would be a bear, then there’s nothing wrong with starting with WordPress 2.0.2.
Yes, some software may have quirks and other problems due to some significant changes, but if you can live with those quirks (and they usually have workarounds)…then, go for it.
Otherwise, secure your copy of 1.5.x and keep rockin’ it until you decide it’s time to upgrade.

Ive installed Wordpress successfully . Now I could not save or publish any post in writing. Whenever I click on the save button or publish button there is always the messege “Sorry, you need to enable sending referrers for this feature to work.”
Now I visited http://codex.wordpress.org/Enable_Sending_Referrers
and checked both what is listed for my browser and also my firewall.
Ive inserted my website to my browser IE6.
But I did not find Privacy Control > Advanced > Add Site buttons for my firewell “Norton Antivirus 2004″
Astonishing , I can import any post from my other blogs as for example Blogger . Ive imported one .
Now please instruct me how could I enable sending referrers for this feature to work and publish my posts?

Hi Trilochan,
Because I really don’t know how you’ve set up your browser, firewall, or anti-virus software, there’s not much I can do.
I would suggest reading through the WordPress Codex again to see if you may have overlooked something.
I believe you’re supposed to follow those instructions within the Antivirus software itself and not Internet Explorer.
You may want to speak with the makers of your anti-virus software and have them walk you through allowing the sending of referrers.
If there’s anything else I can assist with, let me know.
Warm regards,
~ Teli
