After releasing the Reviving A Blog With Datafeeds case study, many of you requested that I release the script I used to build the site — and I did. A number of you expressed interest in the script, but simply wanted a way to easily convert the affiliate datafeeds into RSS format, and I’ve been listening.
For the last few months, I’ve been hammering out the details being careful to make it lightweight and easy to use. For the most part, the script itself is complete, now I’m working on the documentation.
To give you a run down of what the script is designed to do:
- Create an RSS 2.0 xml file from any properly formatted CSV or text datafeed. (You can actually format a CSV file with your own articles or content for conversion.)
- Can customize the content layout with special tokens for the title, description, links, image, and other items.
- Allows you to define a default category before conversion, or use categories supplied in the datafeed file.
- Very easy installation. It’s a matter of uploading a folder and your datafeed(s).
- Lightweight (one small file).
- Only needs to be installed once on one server and can output the RSS file using whichever filename you specify (good for creating multiple RSS files back to back).
Once you’ve created your affiliate RSS file from your datafeed, you can use your preferred software to import the content into your blog (or website).
Chances are, I will release the script to OptiNiche customers first (as I did with the WordPress Data Feed Import script). The good news is, I probably won’t limit the Data Feed To RSS licenses.
Update: OptiNiche customers may now purchase the script (with a discount) - see Datafeed to RSS Script Now Available for details.

Hi Teli,
I think you defintely “should” limit the licenses.

Hi Steph,
Thanks for chiming in and letting me know how you feel.
I decided to limit the WP import script because I saw a true potential for abuse because it super simplified the process of getting products from a datafeed into a WP blog.
The datafeed to rss script has a buffer because you will need another software, like the bonus script that comes with the OptiNiche package, in order to get the content imported into a blog or website.
Nothing’s set in stone yet, so I may change my mind and decide to limit the licenses. I’ll think on it some more.

Hi,
Your script is very nice and very easy to use. Are you planning to create more plug-ins for different Blog software such as Serendipity, BlogSmith or Blooger?

Hi Andrew,
Thank you for stopping by and commenting.
Which script are you referencing, Data Feed To RSS or WP Data Feed Import?
As for whether I’ll be writing plugins for other blog platforms, no. The focus is on WordPress or datafeeds and RSS in general.

Thank you for the clarification Andrew.
I definitely tried to keep it very simple to use while I was crafting it. When I do release it, I hope others will find it easy to use and understand as well.
