With the release of WordPress 2.1, there have been many people eager to upgrade to the newest version and some who have been intimidated by the upgrade process. To show you how you can manually upgrade your installation of WordPress, I’ve done a quick video tutorial for you.
This video tutorial assumes:
- Your host has phpMyAdmin (or that you’re using a WordPress back up plugin)
- You’re running Windows (This is because I use FileZilla. Those on a Mac can still view, and hopefully, learn the upgrade process from the video.)
- That you have an FTP client installed and understand how to use your FTP client.
- You’re running a fairly standard installation of WordPress 2.0.x (if you’ve made any modifications to any files, you’ll probably need to make those same modifications to your new 2.1 files)
With all of that out of the way, we can begin the tutorial. You’ll need to have the latest Flash player installed in order to view the video.
Upgrading WordPress 2.0.x to WordPress 2.1 (3.39MB)
If you choose to link to this video, please link to this link and not the video link. From time to time, I like to organize my files and the video may end up being moved, however, this link will always remain updated.

Great info Teli - I am sure many people can use this info when they are upgrading. How would you suggest someone go about checking if all of their customizations and plugins work with the new system prior to upgrading?

Hi Evan,
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
The WordPress Codex plugin compatibility list and theme compatibility list should be the first places to check (plugin/theme authors are encouraged to add their plugins/themes to the list). If your plugin/theme isn’t listed at all, then you can try contacting the author directly.
Now, if you’ve personally made a lot of tweaks to your themes/plugins or you can’t get in touch with the plugin/theme author, then I’d suggest testing it out on a local installation or test installation of WordPress 2.1 before using them on a production site.

Thank you! When I first installed WP I used your video tutorial because I wasn’t very certain of my ability to install it. Using your tutorial, it went through easily! I always tell my friends about it when they install it too.

Thanks deko.
Just a note, for the video tutorials, I use Captivate and I’ll actually be switching over to Camtasia pretty soon because it exports in formats other than swf. Neither involve Flash.

Hi there. Just a quick note of THANKS for your helpful video guide. I’ve put off upgrading for weeks, always starting into the instructions on WordPress.org and then going cross-eyed about ten minutes into it. Your helpful video made it easy for me to upgrade both of my blog sites. THANK YOU again for the help! Your newest fan, Joe Hutsko

Hi there, that’s a great video you have. After viewing many blogs, it’s really hard to find good solid tutorials out there on the web, for free. I’m wanting to upgrade soon, so your video is invaluable, thanks.

Hi Teli,
Thanks so much for your tutorial. Beautifully illustrated and smoothly narrated. I find your blog to be quite honest and helpful and there is no question about the fact that you will go places.
Teli, will the upgrade to WP 2.3 allow the addition of Blogrush? Would you suggest self-hosting? I got a scare while logging to apply your instructions to upgrade and seemed to have entered the wrong password inadvertently and got suspended. However, fortunately I got back access after about two hours.
Is http://www.telidesign.com/ your website? I found it listed under your profile at Skype. If it is not a problem with you, whenever you, you can skype me at f2f4life whenever I’m online.
Thanks for your help again Teli,
Michael

Sorry for the double post Teli, but I thought I got back full access. I can only make changes to my dashboard etc. but my blog is off the radar. this is the message I am getting: “This blog has been archived or suspended for a violation of our Terms of Service.”
This is really making me reconsider the free wordpress service as obviously there is no control on the part of the blogger. Now my readers can’t access my blog.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael,
Thank you for the kind words. Yes, the Teli Design website is my design portfolio.
It seems there’s some confusion about what WordPress is as opposed to WordPress.com — yep, there’s a difference.
WordPress refers to the software you download and install on your own hosting account. WordPress.com refers to the free blog hosting service provided by Automattic.
Based on the information you’ve revealed about your blog, it appears you’re using the WordPress.com service and don’t have your own installation of WordPress.
That said, you wouldn’t need to worry about any upgrades or installations of anything yourself; Automattic handles all of that on their end.
If you were to get your own domain name/hosting, then you most certainly could install WordPress and add the BlogRush script to your site anywhere you want. Not the case with the WordPress.com service which can be limiting, especially for online marketers or anyone who wishes to earn a significant income from his blog.
In fact, if you have any type of advertising, paid text links, or affiliate links on your WP.com blog, it may be the reason you’re seeing the ToS violation message now.
My recommendation, if you haven’t been monetizing your WP.com blog, is to contact support or leave a query in the WP.com support forums.
I truly hope that helps.
