Once upon a time, Movable Type was free to use and download for everyone. Then a time came when they decided to have commercial licenses, which shifted into a combination of commercial licenses and a free “for personal use” license. Now, they’ve come full circle announcing that its latest version will be free (for now) and open source.
They say it’s because they’ve got a mission, but chances are, that mission is just trying to regain some of the market share they lost to WordPress.
By the way, just because something is open source doesn’t mean it has to be free — chances are, the commercial licenses won’t be abolished. After doing a bit of digging, the suspicions are confirmed:
Are you abandoning the commercial version of Movable Type?
Absolutely not. In fact, we’ve never been more committed to the commercial success of Movable Type, nor more excited about its prospects in the market. … With the release of Movable Type 4.0 we are demonstrating our commitment to the commercial version of the product with the biggest development investment we’ve made in any version in Movable Type’s history. Gee, what else is new. Wordpress is MUCH easier to install and otherwise deal with, than MT.
