Hi Teli! Thank you for the cool tip. I'll definitely give it a try.

I'd love to ask you a question, but I think it may be a little off-topic.

When publishing excerpts, is it the "more" tag or the "optional excerpt" that dictates what will appear in your feed?

If you visit my feed, it displays the optional excerpts, but when I look at my feed in my Feedburner Dashboard or in Google Reader, my feed shows the excerpts created with the "more" tag.

Could you please explain to me why this is happening? And whether I can control it? (I'd like to have the "optional excerpt" versions appear on my category and archive pages, and the "more tag" version in my feed and on the front page of my blog).

Any help is very much appreciated!

Hi Jermayn,
If you're using the template tag
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>
to display your excerpt, then not without modifying the WP core files or using a plugin.

One such plugin is The Excerpt Reloaded; I haven't tested it with WP 2.3, however, from some of the comments it seems to be compatible.

Ok lets say you use the excerpt instead of the
more
option, is there anyway of getting a "read more" instead of the
[...]

Thanks

@Teli, my point was that the goal of any blogger should be to provide full text to everyone that wants/needs it... regardless of their reading style (feed, email, or web).

Just thought people should be aware of the default implications of the more tag.

Also wanted to add something else:

The reasoning behind this is that in your RSS feeds (which is the main people read your blog) the more link cuts off your feed.

Not entirely accurate. There are still many people who do not know what an RSS feed is, how one works, or have a feed reader and don't really care to learn about it.

As much as we'd prefer to have all or a majority of our readers using our feeds, it's important to note that there are many who would prefer updates via e-mail or would simply like to check back to the site of their own accord.

Or, if having a post cut off due to the more tag in the RSS is an issue, the blogger can just install a small plugin which negates it and have the best of both worlds. :)

Full Text Feed

I don't really advise people to use the "more" tag, instead edit their theme and put "the_excerpt" where "the_content" is... then write a meaningful excerpt with every post.

The reasoning behind this is that in your RSS feeds (which is the main people read your blog) the more link cuts off your feed.

I really enjoy your site and hope you check out mine as well.

Nice tip! We have a couple of verbose bloggers on our company group blog and a custom tag lets a bit of their personality and style come through. Thanks!

Hi Rose,
Glad to see you around here.

Make sure that your blog is running WP 2.1 or above. Also, make sure there is a space between the word 'more' and the text you want to display and make sure that you enter the tag in the 'code' view if you're using the WYSIWYG editor.

Hope that helps,
~ Teli
