After hearing about John Reese’s latest project, BlogRush, geared towards bloggers wanting to share traffic with one another, I decided to give it a spin for myself – I even created a couple video tutorials for installing the widget. But, after having it installed for a little under a week, I’m beginning to develop some reservations about the program.
The Good
First, let’s look at why this can be a wonderful thing. It’s white hat. Bloggers share their traffic with one another based on a category system. Basically, only the blogs listed within the category you selected when you sign up will be syndicated within your BlogRush widget which should ensure that the traffic is targeted. Many people are already reporting an increase in traffic and feed subscriptions from BlogRush and now that we finally have stats, things have been looking up.
The Bad
Of course, other bloggers may not have the same luck with the program based on the simple fact that they got in on it late. Others have, correctly, raised the point that BlogRush is an elaborate MLM traffic exchange. The people at the top of the pyramid – the earliest adopters and popular bloggers – are more likely to reap the most benefit although they may not need it; a case of the rich getting richer.
The (Potentially Very) Ugly
The bad shouldn’t be bad enough to deter you because, although you get in late, you can still reap the benefits of the traffic. In other words, you’ll still get views in the widget even if you don’t have thousands of referral credits as others do and you have opportunities to earn more by getting your friends and readers to join under you. But, there is something that could potentially get out of hand if left unchecked: The low threshold for entry.
Today, I noticed a strange, yet familiar post title in the sidebar widget; it read, “Hello World!” Anyone who’s installed WordPress for the first time would recognize it as the title for the default first post. I figured that maybe someone was just using the title to introduce a product or service, but after clicking through to read it, low and behold, it was a brand new WP blog with absolutely no content.
A new blog with no content would never (I repeat never) be knowingly approved for a link from my site, not even in the comment section, so I don’t like it when a widget in my sidebar links out to one. When you sign up for BlogRush, there is no approval period and, now I’m aware, there is no blog review process either. That means any Tom, Dick, or Harry with an RSS feed and a website could get approved into the BlogRush traffic exchange program and start spamming the system to kingdom come.
Over the next week or so, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on the widget and the content it links out to. If I start seeing more links to brand new blogs or websites with little value to my readers, I’ll nuke it altogether. I sincerely hope that John and team can get some checks and balances put into place soon so we can avoid this problem in the future.

Sincerely I do not look good on this Blogrush thing when it came out, bcoz the rich get richer, the poor remains the same (rich and poor in terms of traffic). It is a toy designed more beneficial to:
1.Blogs that already have good traffic
2.The Blogrush team itself
So i never joined and just stay aside to observe the hype to burst.

I joined the first day it launched and have been accumulating credits daily. I don’t know how much of the benefits I will reap though because I don’t have to many referrals under me like some of the rest.

Blogrush says they are now manually reviewing every blog that signs up to ensure it is a valid blog and presumable of some minimum quality.
# September 29th, 2007
It is not practical to manually review so lot of blogs that emerge everyday.

I just joined two weeks ago and it has doubled my traffic. I don’t know if it is from Blogrush or that people are finding me. My blog is very much a niche so who knows? I wish there is a way to figure out how much is coming from them? Any suggestions?
I do feel your title is everything when you write a post that appears on Blogrush. I also wish they would allow you to be in more than one catagory because I post about gardening as well as green building products, and my catagory is environment. Well, readers do not always want to read gardening posts when they are looking strictly for environmental posts.

An even better plugin which lets you control what blogs appear is the one Sarah has made here:
http://www.stuffbysarah.net/blog/wordpress-plugins/
it is much much better as you control it.

BlogRush is a horrible scheme, and the fact that they don’t offer adequate tools to incorporate it seamlessly into a blog makes it all stick out like a sore thumb.
I personally avoid clicking anything within those images because it just shows how eager people are for attention/me me me.

I have to admit, I’m not all that impressed with Blog Rush, either. I started using it the day after it was launched. I’ve been checking my traffic stats and while I am getting some traffic from it, it’s nothing to write home about.
Logging into the dashboard still says they’re rolling out major improvements coming soon.
While it does say that Blogrush is Beta, I would have thought it would have gone through the typical beta testing prior to releasing it to the public.

Hello everyone,
I know I’ve been quiet on this topic (and blog) for a little while, but I assure you that I read every comment that comes through here.
Yes, I received the e-mail from John that BlogRush will now be manually reviewing blogs for quality and do appreciate the iniative on his part.
I also received the e-mail and read the blog entry stating that BlogRush is undergoing some major improvements in the coming days and weeks.
Frankly, though, I’m inclined to agree with Patty in her observations. The traffic is nothing to write home about.
Chances are, the BlogRush widget will be removed from this blog in a few days to about a week if I don’t see significant improvements.
I understand that targeted traffic is targeted traffic, but as far as I can tell, it doesn’t appear to add value for my current readers and the gain from having it in my sidebar isn’t worth it.
Maybe I’ll put the question forward for you all to answer. In any event, it would be nice if BlogRush weren’t so “Beta” when it launched.

It can always be Beta and in the process of improvement, only up to blogger to believe it or not.
If when launched everything is OK until now, then he will say Final release. If get a lot of complaints, then he will say because it is still in beta! Any ways he is the winner and nothing to lose!

Personally, I think BlogRush is an innovative idea but I’m quite skeptical about its impact in increasing my website traffic.

It looks as if John Reese has read your reservations about Blog Rush. New blogs are no longer accepted and they seem to be looking at the blogs that apply now too. I have one which is only a week or so and only had 3 posts. This was rejected. Fair enough- I will submit it again when its a little more mature.
# October 16th, 2007
I joined BlogRush too and based on the webstats my hosting company gathers, for about 300 credits, I’m getting 1 traffic delievered from BlogRush. It seems pretty low imo.
# October 24th, 2007
I agree on what you say with a pyramid way to bring traffic. I have open a discussion on Blog Catalog recently about this and found that it was actually many people are not benefiting from the program. When we ask those people who received good traffic or credit, either he had good content posted in BlogRush or he had active referrals. In order to keep yourself at the top of the pyramid traffic is through referring people.
# October 26th, 2007
I submitted 2 blogs, this one and another one. Both were accepted and then this one (listed) was dropped, so it seems, without any explanation. I have emailed at least 3 separate times to ask for an explanation and have received none, thus far. There is no reason, other than my moderately conservative politics, to have dropped it.
As for traffic, my other health blog, and this blog when it was part of the network, receive negligble traffic from blogrush. Perhaps 1 or 2 hits total from the widget in the past 3 weeks or so. I get most of my traffic from google searches and my regular reader/subscribers.

Now that more time has passed, and the dust has settled…what are the opinions on BlogRush?
Have the issues been resolved? Or have they only been magnified?

Hi Teli,
This Blogrush widget sounds really cool. I look forward to seeing if it works or not. Keep me posted. I love blogging…
Warmly,
