If you haven’t already done so, I highly recommend downloading and installing Windows Live Writer. It’s even improved since I wrote my Windows Live Writer review just over a year ago. The 2009 version has a number of photo and publishing updates, not to mention the options it gives you with the latest version of WordPress.
One qualm I still have with WLW, however, is that there’s no way to have it open a new post immediately after publishing an entry to the blog—at least, not without manually choosing a new post or opting to open an entirely new WLW post window.

Can you publish now to self hosted wordpress?, last time i had it installed it wasn’t possible. I think the problem was on wp side, but yeah i agree that WLW is a great piece of software.

Yes, you’re able to publish to a self hosted WP blog. In fact, the last few versions have allowed this. You simply have to choose “Other” when setting up your blog account when it asks for your blog provider.

Where can I download Windows Live Writer? Is there a link where I can get it?

You can download it from the Windows Live Writer website.
Note that when you go through the installation process, it will ask you if you’d like to install a whole bunch of other stuff…uncheck everything except Writer and when the installation process is complete, make sure to uncheck the options to make MSN your homepage (unless, of course, you want to).
