This should not be new news to anyone, we all saw this coming a mile away. But while watching an episode of the WB’s Gilmore Girls last night, Rory Gilmore (one of the main characters) mentioned the word blog and blogoshere within the same breath.

It was only amplified by the fact that a week prior, the UPN beat them to the punch by actually starting the season premier of Half and Half with their main character Mona Thorn publishing an entry to her blog.

Why is this all important? Blogging has now officially hit the mainstream. These shows are merely foreshadowing what is on the way. Blogs and blogging are becoming commonplace and are becoming household words (like Google which now has a snappy home in the Webster’s New Millennium dictionary).

Yes, the recent Dell commercials have been off-handedly mentioning that their “back to school” computers can be used to blog for the past few months now, but the UPN and especially the WB cater to a very specific audience — young people aged 18-24 with money to spend.

According to a special on Dateline NBC a few weeks ago, the dotcom generation (also nicknamed the ipod generation) account for a large part of the consumer spending and they’re not taking their cues from t.v. commercials. Their trends start with friends, the mall, or online.

If you’ve been waiting for a reason to get blogging, now you have one - but if you do, don’t be silly. They can smell a fake blog or splog a mile away and this new tech savvy generation is picky. It’s time to adapt, find their need and fill it.
